Novels for a Slow Weekend
Three novels I saved for a weekend with nowhere to be — the kind of book that makes you forget what time it is.

There is a particular kind of novel I save for weekends with no plans — the ones that ask for a whole afternoon, a pot of tea, and permission to ignore the phone. These are three I read recently that earned the full slow-weekend treatment.
The one that swallows the day
A doorstop of a family novel that I started on Saturday morning and did not put down until the lamp came on. The kind of book where you look up and realize three hours have gone and the tea is cold. It is not plot that keeps you — it is the feeling that you have moved into the house on the page and are not ready to leave.
“A slow weekend novel is not a page-turner. It is a place you agree to live for two days.”
My rule for the adult-readers pile: it has to be worth the hours it asks for. Life is too short for a four-hundred-page book that earns two hundred of them. These three earned every page.
